It’s not plausible that there can be a singular vision of “rewilding” for Ireland. Multiple, overlapping and interwoven visions of rewilding must coexist in order for Ireland to fulfil its potential as the wildest, healthiest island on the planet…

No-Mow May was a great boost to pollinators across Ireland… But what now, as we enter the perilous “June Gap” where pollen and nectar can become scarce?

A specific day in the calendar to celebrate bee kind! And World Bee Day is also an important reminder (thanks to the beekeepers of Slovenia) that small countries like Ireland can boost pollinator wellbeing worldwide.

Beechnuts are often overlooked but they are a great source of wild protein and fat in the Irish landscape. Not as delicious as Hazelnuts - but more plentiful. And not as plentiful as Acorns - but more delicious (and much easier to prepare!).

Also known as “cobnuts” - we are lucky to get a bounty of these up here in County Donegal, at the time when the summer draws to a close and autumn sets in. 

An overlooked treasure of Ireland’s woodlands and hedgerows….delicious, too - if you can get to them before the squirrels! 

Without looking it up - would you know which county in Ireland is so apple-mad it is called the Orchard County?

Now, if you don’t know, the answer will be revealed at the end…

But let me tell you first that we were there in the Orchard County this weekend to celebrate the end of the apple harvest…

And the reason for pursuing this apple-lined avenue of enquiry was to get a sense of what the apple could mean for rewilding in Ireland…

Our opportunity is that people in Ireland have a chance to discover the world of bees anew - because there are so many more amazing bees in Ireland (and indeed the world) - besides the Honey and the Bumble!

Even the fact that there are various types of Honey Bee is a fun fact about which most people are unaware.
